Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

Getting Smarter While Feeding the Hungry

I never cease to be amazed by the number of websites that are dedicated to helping make the world a better place in some way.  This afternoon I was perusing several different ones before I spent some time on one of my old favorites, Freerice.com.  Regular readers of this blog will be familiar with this site as I've mentioned it several times throughout the past year.  For those less familiar, it's a site where you test your knowledge on a variety of subjects (vocabulary, grammar, math, geography, chemistry, etc.) by answering a series of questions.  For each correct response you provide, 10 grams of rice is donated to the United Nations World Food Program.  The money comes from sponsors who advertise on the site.  Pretty simple - exercise your brain and help feed the hungry.
I spent time today mostly doing math and English questions.  It didn't take long for me to be able to donate 2000 grains of rice.  There really are almost unlimited ways all of us can help each other, and many of them can be done right from your own home/computer.

More Free Rice

Today was a busy (and fun) day spent with visiting friends from Atlanta and enjoying watching Alabama football in the evening.  It wasn't until late that I got the chance to at least go to www.freerice.org to answer questions and donate some food to developing nations.  For those who many not know, this is a website where you can test your knowledge of math, vocabulary, geography and other subjects and for each answer you give correctly 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program.  It's a pretty easy way that anyone can help out - even if you don't have much time (like me tonight)!

More Grains of Rice

Tonight, sitting in a hotel on my computer, I was able to help feed the hungry.  How?  Pretty easy, actually.  I simply went to Freerice.com and spent some time challenging myself in a variety of subjects.
I've written about this site before.  It's a non-profit site that's owned by and supports the United Nations World Food Program.  Sponsors, in the form of advertisers, donate money to buy grains of rice based on activity on the site.  The site has 8 different subject areas, each with several sub-categories.  In each area, there are tons of questions in multiple levels of difficulty.  You challenge yourself to answer as many questions correctly as you can.  For each correct answer, 10 grains of rice is donated to the program.  Tonight, I donated 1500 grains of rice, and learned some things at the same time.  Not bad!

An Easy Way to Help

Awhile ago, I wrote about the website, Freerice.com.  This is one of so many websites that make it easier than ever to make a difference - right from your own home and computer.  The founders have two goals:  to educate people and to end hunger.  All you have to do is go on to the site and take part in any number of quizzes on different topics.  They're fun to do.  For every correct answer you get, they'll donate 10 grains of rice.  The money to pay for the rice comes from sponsors who advertise on the site.
Tonight, I was able to donate 1000 grains of rice to help feed hungry people.  When helping becomes this easy, it's hard to think of an excuse for not doing more.

Another Internet Kindness

Well, hopefully this will be my last day for awhile where I'm stuck doing kindness through the internet rather than being out on the street interacting with real live people!  My back is improving, though still pretty sore, so I was still homebound today.
Another site I was turned on to by a friend is called Freerice.com.  It's a pretty interesting concept.  When you log into the site, you choose a category of questions and a level of difficulty.  The site then asks you a series of multiple choice questions.  For each one you answer correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated through the UN World Food Programme.  The rice is paid for by sponsors of the website.  So basically, you get to play a game, test and increase your knowledge, and help reduce world hunger all at the same time.  Not a bad combo.
I spent some time today answering enough questions to donate 1000 grains of rice.  It's a pretty simple concept that anyone can easily do to make a difference.  I'd encourage you to check it out.
Stay tuned as tomorrow I hope to be back on the street!
